Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story house with gray and white horizontal siding, multiple gables, asphalt shingle roof and a small covered front entry, fronted by a large green lawn under a clear blue sky.

A contractor quoting central AC in San Miguel County has to work out what the system is actually being asked to do before any equipment decision makes sense. Homes in San Miguel County, CO have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. The compressor in a system installed here will sit idle rather than cycle through summer heat, and that changes which failure modes a contractor plans against. Seals dry out in long standoffs. A system that never runs hard will also never reveal a sizing error through performance, so the load calculation has to be right from the start, with no operating season to surface a mistake later.

An unfinished basement with exposed wood joists, galvanized sheet-metal ductwork, concrete walls with wood studs, and a pile of split firewood on the concrete floor surrounded by wood debris.

Ductwork laid out for radiant or baseboard heat was never sized for the air volumes a central cooling system moves. Half the homes in San Miguel County, Colorado were built in 1995 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means a contractor brought in to install central AC is often evaluating whether the existing duct layout can carry the new system at all, and where it cannot, what has to be rerouted or replaced before the unit itself is ever ordered. The electrical side gets the same look: service panels in houses of this era were configured for the loads those houses originally ran, and a new condensing unit draws differently. The equipment selection comes after those two questions get answered.

What a Central AC Installation Covers

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit linked by refrigerant lines.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-based coil sits in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and works with the blower to move conditioned air through the home. These are the two main pieces a contractor places and connects.

The refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor and indoor units, carrying refrigerant through copper tubing that gets routed along the exterior or through walls. A thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over when and how the system runs. Both pieces are part of what a full installation covers.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific house.
