Central AC sizing in Larimer County starts with an uncomfortable fact for anyone pricing a new system. Homes in Larimer County, CO have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. A compressor that never turns on still ages: seals dry, refrigerant migrates, and electrical contacts corrode through winters the unit spends sitting. The contractor quoting the job has to account for that idle-period degradation when specifying equipment, because a system rated for a cooling load that never materializes will be oversized and slow to condition the air on the rare day it runs.

An unfinished basement with exposed wood joists, a galvanized sheet-metal duct running along the ceiling, concrete block and poured walls, and a stack of split firewood on the concrete floor with scattered wood debris.

Ductwork laid down for an earlier generation of equipment does not automatically suit what a contractor puts in today. Half the homes in Larimer County, Colorado were built in 1993 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between what the house was built with and what runs in it now is where an installation job gets complicated or stays straightforward. A contractor here has to assess whether the existing duct layout moves enough air for a modern system and whether the electrical service handles the load before a unit is ever ordered.

What a Central AC Installation Covers

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms with furniture and ceiling ductwork, connected to an outdoor condenser unit with a fan beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, which together shed heat from the refrigerant to the outside air. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits where conditioned air begins its journey through the home. These are the two anchors of the system, and both go in as part of a new installation.

Copper refrigerant lines run between the indoor and outdoor units, and a contractor installs or replaces these as part of the work. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. A condensate drain line also runs from the indoor coil to carry away moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.

Severe Weather Events in Larimer County

Weather puts a measurable load on cooling equipment, and that load varies by location. How hard a system has to work, and how long it lasts doing it, is shaped by what the local climate throws at it year after year.
